Create an object using reused waste

Impact data

Making an object from recycled materials — known as upcycling — is the most direct form of circular economy in action: by using existing materials, upcycling avoids the emissions linked to extracting and transporting new raw materials, reducing the product’s carbon footprint. What’s more, manufacturing products from recycled materials uses far less energy than producing them from scratch — recycled aluminium, for example, requires 95% less energy than virgin aluminium.

How to overcome the challenge

Choose your material — Look around the house for things you no longer use: glass jars, pallets, old clothes, cardboard boxes, tins, or fabric scraps.

Imagine what you can make — A jar can become a plant pot or organiser; a t-shirt, a tote bag; a cardboard box, a toy or shelf.

Make it and share it — Create your object and post it online: inspiring others multiplies the impact.
