Buy a piece of fruit that is "ugly" (food waste)

Impact data

In Spain, 7.9 million tonnes of fruit and vegetables are wasted every year for purely cosmetic reasons — that’s 45% of national production. And it has nothing to do with quality: imperfect fruit and vegetables are perfectly edible and their nutritional value is completely unaffected; they are rejected solely on aesthetic grounds. Buying an “ugly” piece of fruit is the simplest gesture to rescue food that would otherwise never reach your plate.

How to beat the challenge

Find it — At the market, greengrocer or supermarket, deliberately pick the oddest, most crooked or blemished piece in the box.

Buy it — Take it home: it tastes just as good or better than the perfect one, and it’s often cheaper.

Share it — Post a photo and normalise the imperfect: every post changes mindsets.
