Many of our clothes are made. Did you know that when we wash synthetic clothes in the washing machine, plastic microfibers come off?

Many of our garments are made of materials that contain plastic such as polyester, nylon or polyamide.

A study commissioned by Friends of the Earth published in 2018 estimated that up to 67% of clothing currently produced in the world contains plastic to a greater or lesser extent.

This plastic comes off in the form of microparticles when we put a washing machine and is incorporated into water and can be a problem for human health and natural ecosystems, as in many cases, water treatment plants can not filter 100% due to its small size.

By opting for natural fabrics such as cotton, linen, wool or silk, we prevent these microparticles from coming off the water.

That’s why we suggest you choose to buy a garment made of natural fibers or try to make it yourself! And plastic-containing materials such as polyester, nylon or polyamide.

Steps to overcome the challenge

Through the Map section of Go Zero Waste you can see which establishments that sell clothes you have near you and you can filter by categories.

When looking for a garment or fabric for making it, look at the label for the composition of the fabric and whether it contains synthetic materials such as polyester, nylon or polyamide.

Choose an option that indicates that it is, for example, 100% cotton.
