Dry clothes outdoors

Impact data

The tumble dryer is one of the most energy-hungry appliances in the home, consuming an average of around 2,000 Wh per use, and its use adds over €100 a year in costs, nearly 500 kWh of energy consumption, and more than 1,088 kg of CO₂ equivalent emissions annually. Air-drying is the zero-emission alternative: drying clothes outdoors generates no CO₂ whatsoever, and doing so 100% of the time can save up to $2,100 per household over the lifetime of a dryer.

How to overcome the challenge

Set up a drying rack — Keep an outdoor or indoor drying rack handy, or hang a line on your balcony or terrace.

Hang clothes straight after washing — Take clothes out of the machine and hang them stretched out so they dry without creases and faster.

Make it a habit — Save the dryer for rainy days or emergencies: in Barcelona, the sun does the job almost all year round.
