Collect three pieces of trash that you see on the beach or in the forest
Impact data
Marine animals can ingest plastics or become entangled in them, causing injuries, infections and in extreme cases death; plastics also break down into microplastics that enter the food chain, affecting all marine life. Cigarette butts, which make up 21% of beach waste, release nicotine and heavy metals that affect water quality and coastal wildlife. Picking up just three pieces may seem small, but 80% of marine litter originates on land: every piece collected on the shore is one that never reaches the sea.
How to overcome the challenge
Come prepared — Bring a reusable bag and, if you have them, a pair of gloves when you head to the beach or forest.
Pick up at least three items — Prioritise plastics, cigarette butts and wrappers; no need to organise a cleanup — just do it as you walk.
Dispose of them properly — Sort them into the right bins or leave them at the nearest bin: the gesture counts, and if you photograph it and inspire someone else, the impact multiplies.
