Every second, the equivalent of a rubbish truck of clothing is incinerated or sent to landfill, and the fashion industry is responsible for up to 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Repairing instead of discarding is the most direct antidote: doubling the useful life of clothing could reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 44%. A stitch, a patch or a new sole are the most radical gestures against throwaway fashion.
How to overcome the challenge
Find the item — Look in your wardrobe or shoe rack for something you’ve stopped wearing due to a tear, loose button, broken zip or worn-out sole.
Repair it — Sew it yourself if it’s simple, or take it to a local tailor, cobbler or repair shop in your neighbourhood.
Share it — Post a before and after: normalising repair is just as important as doing it.
